Written by someone who needed it herself

June Kahn wrote this program after her own diagnosis with non-Hodgkin’s follicular lymphoma and two years of chemotherapy, through which she kept teaching.

“Pilates was my savior.”

She is a Cancer Exercise Specialist herself, and cancer free.

June is the 2009 IDEA World Instructor of the Year, a former Reebok® World Master Trainer, and a PhysicalMind Institute certified Pilates trainer with more than forty years in dance and fitness. She founded June Kahn’s Bodyworks in Boulder, Colorado, developed the AeroPilates® Basic Reformer and Pilates Bowflex® programs, and is a subject matter expert for the ACE certification examination. ACE, AFAA and ACSM certified.

Who this is for

Mat teachers whose students include people in treatment or recovery, and who want the post-surgical material without committing to a full qualification yet.

If you teach mat classes in a studio, a community center, a gym or someone’s living room, this is written for the way you already work. Nothing here assumes apparatus.

It also suits a Cancer Exercise Specialist who wants Pilates-based programming to add to what they already do.

No prior oncology background is required.

What you learn

Individualized Pilates-based programming built on the CETI methodology — not a class plan, but a way of deciding what a particular body in front of you needs.

Mat work for post-surgical restriction — the muscle imbalances and range-of-motion limitations that follow cancer surgery and treatment.

Programming that addresses the mental as well as the physical toll of diagnosis and treatment.

What’s included

The Pilates Mat handbook, written by June, included with the course and also available in hard copy.

Video instruction throughout.

A certificate of completion — there is no examination on this course.

CETI pays your continuing education petition fee, up to $25. Petition forms for other awarding bodies are supplied with the course.

What this is, and what it is not

This is a certificate of completion. It is not a certification, and it is not an Advanced Qualification.

It supplements the CES Advanced Qualification. It does not replace it, and it is not a route to it.

That is a deliberate distinction rather than a limitation. If what you need is the post-surgical mat material and you need it now, this is the direct way to get it.

Where it leads

The mat work here is the entry point.

The complete 15th Edition core curriculum taught through Pilates — with the apparatus programming across reformer, chair and P-Arc, the recorded two-day workshop with Portia Page, an examination and an Advanced Qualification — is the OncoVie® CES Pilates Advanced Qualification, $999.

Nothing you learn here is repeated there. The mat material sits alongside the apparatus programming rather than being covered twice.

What it costs

$199 — self-study, certificate of completion, no examination.

$2,499 — the Everything Package. Fourteen courses and resources including this one, the CES Advanced Qualification, the modality qualifications, coaching, and lifetime renewal.
